Jillian, This one's for you! ;)
Oh Giraffes, they are just so interesting. You gotta love their long legs and spots. Question. What the heck are the lumps on the top of their heads? They are not ears so what are they? Did you know that you can feed the Giraffes at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo? Someday I will and I will let you know how it is!

He's so tired! I didn't know this is how Giraffes sleep.
The lumps on the heads of Giraffes are actually horns made of cartilage and are called ossicones. Males use them when fighting, and they can also be used to tell apart male and female Giraffes. Female ossicones are smaller and have tufts of hair on the tops, while males ossicones are larger and all the hair has been worn away from "necking" which is how Giraffes fight.
